2397 | OLD STAMP ENDORSED 1841 1d RED (WITH MX) COVER CHARGED "2[d]" EX FERRYBRIDGE: 19 Aug. 1843 EL (slight stains) with very brief semi-literate contents sent from "FERRYBRIDGE" (cds on front) to Penistone (Barnsley transit cds on reverse) with 3-margin 1d Red (GG; plate 29, filing crease) seemingly tied by a light Maltese Cross but with a bold red ms "Old Stamp" alongside with a black ms "2[d]" Postage Due charge. Perhaps the stamp had been poorly glued on so that the Postmaster could see that it had been used previously, and there is some faint rubbing around the Queen's face which may suggest the removal of a previous light cancel... [The contents are; "Der sir, I feel verry sorrey that I have not anser your Letter sooner I having left home the mornig your Letter Came. I shall be glad to whate your aparabiation. Your Respectfull N. Lee"] "Old Stamp" covers are very rare prior to 1844 and very seldom seen before 1870. [Ex Don Walton.][This lot was sold for £440 + BP in Cavendish's Sept. 2024 auction, lot 869, but returned after review by the RPSL with a cert. with a slightly unhelpful comment that "we cannot certify endorsement or charge are contemporary as to the date of the letter sheet" [sic]. However, we at Cavendish are convinced that this is a totally genuine usage and cover, so it is offered again here, but on the basis that it will now be sold "as seen", and not be returnable. Everyone agrees that the stamp belongs to the cover (inc. the RPSL), but in our opinion the "Old Stamp" endorsement and "2" charge are also 100% genuine!] Cross Reference: POSTAGE DUE MARKS, YORKSHIRE | ![]() | $200 |
