313Steam Packet Franklin (Lake Champlain). Complete red circular handstamp on 1832 folded letter from Burlington to Albany, manuscript "B" (Boat) and 18¾ rate, Very Fine and choice, Illustrated in Milgram.Milgram No. 470; Estimate $400 - 600. The Sherman family commenced steamboat services on Champlain Lake in 1812 and formed the Champlain Transportation Co. in 1825. From 1834, they were contracted to carry mails between Rouses Point and Whitehall, and later from St. John L.(ower)C.(anada). The Champlain Transportation company was the first inland water steamboat operator to employ a Name-of-Boat cachet with the "Franklin" recorded from 1831.

The Frank Pargoud built in 1868 for the Ouachita River trade was, at 1,105 tons too big. Tobin used her for the New Orleans and Memphis trade.

Black straightline handstand on 1818 folded cover to Montreal, sent via Kingston and backstamped "Kingston 22Oct1818" postmark and with "1N2" manuscript rate on front, two vertical file folds, Very Fine, Pictured in the Robinson Lowe Encyclopedia, Volume Five, Page 77, with 1992 Holcombe certificate.Milgram No. 487; Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.AN OUTSTANDING AND IMPORTANT STEAMBOAT COVER AS THIS IS THE EARLIEST STEAMBOAT MARKING EVER RECORDED. The "Frontenac" was built in 1816 at Ernest-town (later Bath), Upper Canada. Her ports of call were Prescott, Kingston, York and Niagara. She was a three masted schooner with one funnel and paddle wheels. She burned off Niagara in August, 1827.
