Letter with wonderful content, The "Steamer Warrior" on which we embarked sunk last night about sixty miles above Vicksburg - no lives were lost. Boat a perfect wreck. Eliza lost her trunk and her geranium parasol and my umbrella. The boat snagged near a wood yard and we did not discover that she was snagged until after we commenced. I had gone on shore and heard the cry that the boat was sinking. I ran back into the cabin and picked up cousin Jane's baby and told them all to follow me. We got off just in time before the boat put off for a bar opposite. She gained it with much difficulty and sank immediately above the lower deck. The "Franklin" was waiting alongside and I had the utmost difficulty in getting my trunk and a few band boxes on board. I am really thankful that it is no worse. | ![]() | $1,000 |
